What is a two-line element set (TLE) used for?

A TLE describes orbital elements used to predict satellite position; relevant for tracking, telemetry, and pointing

Two-Line Element sets encode the essential orbital information of a satellite at a specific time so you can predict where it will be in the future. The data are designed for quick orbital propagation—you feed them into a model (like SGP4/SDP4) to compute the satellite’s position and velocity at any given moment. The elements describe the orbit’s shape and orientation (inclination, longitude of the ascending node, eccentricity, argument of perigee, and mean anomaly) along with how fast it’s moving (mean motion) and the epoch from which the predictions are made. With this, operators can forecast ground-track passes, determine how high and where the satellite will appear in the sky, and precisely point antennas for tracking, telemetry, and commanding. It is not a weather forecast, it does not define payload, and it does not set modulation.
